99.9% of car leathers are surface-dyed, single-colored smooth leathers. These are leathers in which a layer of color completes the surface. In the past, car leathers were all vegetable-tanned. In recent decades, however, chrome-tanned leather has become established. When it comes to cleaning and care, however, it is not the type of tanning that is decisive, but the age of the leather and its condition.

Most furniture leathers are single-colored, surface-dyed, matt to silk-matt cowhides. However, there are also aniline leathers (open-pored smooth leathers), suede leathers (such as suede) or shiny, coated PU leathers. In the case of aniline leathers, a drop of water rubbed onto the leather (not in the stressed area) is absorbed and darkens the leather.

The following instructions apply to surface-dyed, single-colored, matt smooth leather.

If the leather is soiled, it should be cleaned with COLOURLOCK Cleaner mild or COLOURLOCK Cleaner strong, depending on the degree of soiling. This prevents soiling from fixing to the leather through the care product. The COLOURLOCK Cleaner strong is used for obviously heavy soiling and the COLOURLOCK Cleaner mild for light soiling.

If the dirt is deep in the grain, you should also use our
COLOURLOCK Leather Cleaning Brush.

Recently, the steering wheels, gear knobs and door handles of cars and the contact surfaces of leather upholstery - which are in constant contact with the skin - have been cleaned and disinfected with above-average frequency. To avoid dissolving the leather colors with commercially available disinfectants with a high alcohol content, we recommend
COLOURLOCK Hygiene Cleaner for leather, artificial leather and plastic surfaces. This cleaner can be used to gently clean and disinfect such surfaces.

Our recommendation for cleaning new leather:
If the leather is visibly soiled, it should be cleaned with COLOURLOCK Mild Cleaner. Depending on use, the leather should be treated with
COLOURLOCK Leather Sealer every 3 to 6 months. It effectively prevents signs of wear or soiling and discoloration.

Our recommendation for treating older leather:

In the case of visible soiling, the leather must be cleaned with COLOURLOCK Cleaner Mild before care. If the dirt is deep in the grain, the soft KCX leather cleaning brush should also be used.
