Polishing your car properly - instructions & product tips.
Why polishing makes sense and how to do it properly
Polishing a vehicle is far more than just a cosmetic step - it is an essential part of paint care. Polishing removes fine scratches, holograms, oxidation and dull spots in the paintwork. At the same time, the surface is smoothed, which significantly increases the gloss and intensifies the color depth.
A well-polished paint finish reflects light evenly, has a higher quality appearance and is better protected against environmental influences. In addition, subsequent paint sealing improves resistance to UV radiation, bird droppings, insect residues and road salt. Regular polishing not only preserves the value of your vehicle, but also increases its resale value.
And in the end, a polished car simply looks good!
1. polishing agents (polishes)
- Abrasive polishes: Remove deeper scratches and paint defects.
- Fine polishes: For light swirls and to increase gloss.
- One-step polishes: Combine a sanding and finishing effect in one product.
2. polishing machine
- Eccentric polishing machines: Ideal for beginners, as they are gentle on the paintwork.
- Rotary polishers: For experienced users, particularly effective for severe defects.
3. polishing pads
- In various degrees of hardness (hard, medium, soft) - to suit the polish and the desired effect.
4. accessories
- Microfiber cloths: For removing polish residues.
- Masking tape: To protect plastic parts.
- Paint cleaner or degreaser: To prepare the surface.
These are the most important steps for polishing a vehicle properly:
Step 1: Wash the vehicle thoroughly
Remove dirt, insect residue and tar with a high-quality car shampoo and rust remover if necessary.
Step 2: Prepare the paint surface
Use a cleaning clay to remove deep-seated dirt. Then degrease with a paint cleaner.
Step 3: Mask the vehicle
Protect plastic parts, rubber and sensitive areas with masking tape.
Step 4: Select and apply polish
Select the appropriate polish and pad. Apply the polish with the machine in a criss-cross motion. Work in small sections (approx. 40x40 cm).
Step 5: Remove polish residue
Remove the residue with a clean microfiber cloth and check the shine.
Step 6: Seal the paintwork
Finally, apply a paint sealant or wax to preserve the result.
How often should a car be polished?
Once or twice a year is usually sufficient. More frequent polishing can wear away the paintwork unnecessarily if there are no defects.
Can a car also be polished by hand?
Yes, but the result is usually less intensive. However, hand polishing makes sense for light polishing or sensitive areas.
Which polishing machine is suitable for beginners?
An eccentric polishing machine is ideal for beginners - it is safe to use and minimizes the risk of holograms or polishing through.
What is the difference between abrasive polish and finish polish?
Abrasive polishes remove scratches and dull spots, finish polishes ensure a high gloss and a perfect finish.
Do you have to seal after polishing?
Yes, absolutely. A paint sealant protects the polished surface from environmental influences and maintains the shine in the long term.
